WTF is wrong with the world?

As long as I have resided here, I have seen a lot of changes.

In only ten years, I have watched countless numbers of trees be removed for development. Development of residences, business, so desperately needed CAR WASHES. Another Sonic here, another WalMart there. And why?

Well, I don't rightly have an answer. Maybe it's because we have nothing better to do with our time than to figure out how we can destroy our world today. Maybe it's because we really think we don't have the resources to rebuild an area that is already developed, so we decide to develop an area that was once a lush, green forested area and let the other developed area go to hell... become a slum village, or have those homes condemned and squatters move in. Have that particular area become a drug infested war zone with drive-bys or knifing over who's money paid for what (or in a murder case, didn't pay for anything). Good neighborhoods gone to crap because the city council refuses to do a damn thing about it... or they TRY and succeed only in moving the bad people, drug people, to a different part of the county so the city doesn't have to worry about it. "It's not our problem anymore. Let the county worry about it now."

Maybe it's because big corporations are actually greedy bastards who can think of only one way to make money. So they make their money, but if something goes wrong, i.e. the Alaskan Pipeline, they say, "We have to charge the American people to fix it because we don't want to spend the billions and trillions of dollars on something we knew was going to go bad to begin with."

What's wrong with the PEOPLE when they LET the government decide what's good for them and what's bad for them? Why not fight back. Say something, for crying out loud? It never ceases to amaze me when I hear people bitch on a daily basis about how bad the government is doing, yet they sit back and say, "Oh well. There's nothing I can do about it." When in fact, there IS something you can do about it. Maybe not on the grander scale that most people think, but in your own community, or ON your own.

I've been thinking a lot about this whole global warming thing.

THE FIRST AND FOREMOST WAY TO STOP GLOBAL WARMING:

PLANT A TREE.

Trees take in CO2, right? Well, if you think about it, when you cut down a tree, you take away the earth's natural ability to heal itself. Instead of, and this goes back to the first topic above, clearing out 100 acres of trees to build a strip mall and then only panting 20 trees for decoration, have someone go in and select trees to keep, some of the oldest trees say, and cut down the sick, dying or dead trees. And THEN plant new trees.

One of these days, when there are only a few trees left, someone is going to cut them down thinking, "Oh, it's okay. There are still more trees." And then someone else will see it and say, "You know, you just cut down the last few trees on earth." What then?

Stop and think about it the next time the tree in your front yard sheds too much and you decide to get rid of it. That tree probably does a whole lot more for you than you think. Is your house in the shade from this tree? Chances are, your electric bill is lower than your neighbor's, if they don't have a tree in their yard. Do you have a nice green lawn under the tree? Most likely it's because the leaves from the tree are actually supplying your yard nutrients (unless of course it's an Oak. I hear the acid from oak leaves is bad for lawns). But instead of cutting it down because there is more yard work for you to do, put a bench or a swing under it. If you have a tree in your backyard, have a picnic under it with your family or significant other. Try camping out under it one night with your kids.

It's more about the little things that the earth has to offer than anything else. When the lakes dry up, and the trees are all gone, what will we have left to enjoy?
